At Cherry Burton Primary School, our aim in teaching languages is to develop pupils’ curiosity, confidence, and enjoyment in learning a foreign language. We focus on laying strong foundations for future language learning at secondary school and beyond.

We have chosen to teach French, as this is the language studied by our three main feeder secondary schools. Learning another language not only broadens pupils’ cultural awareness but also helps them understand the world, appreciate differences, and recognise similarities between cultures. Through language learning, pupils develop respect, tolerance, and a sense of global citizenship.

Our languages curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop confidence in listening and speaking, enabling them to communicate ideas and respond to others.

  • Build a growing vocabulary and understand basic grammar structures appropriate for their age.

  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation, fostering a willingness to speak aloud.

  • Begin to read and write familiar words, phrases, and simple sentences in French.

  • Understand language patterns, including similarities and differences between English and French.

  • Learn about the culture and traditions of countries where French is spoken.

  • Develop transferable skills such as memory, problem-solving, and active listening.

We use the iLanguages program, which provides a structured and engaging approach to language learning. Our curriculum is inclusive and accessible, ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND and EAL, can participate and succeed through multisensory, practical, and enjoyable activities such as songs, games, stories, and role-play.

We aim to foster a positive attitude to language learning, encouraging resilience, curiosity, and enjoyment. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be well-prepared for the next stage of their language learning journey, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to continue studying French at secondary school.
