At Cherry Burton Primary School, our intent is to inspire a lifelong love and appreciation of music. Our music curriculum is designed to give children strong roots in musical knowledge, skills, and appreciation, and the wings to express themselves confidently and creatively.
By the end of their time at primary school, pupils will have experienced a rich and varied musical education that enables them to:
- Listen and Appraise: Develop an understanding and enjoyment of a wide range of music from different times, places, and cultures, recognising key elements such as pitch, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics.
- Perform: Sing and play instruments with increasing accuracy, expression, and control—both individually and as part of an ensemble.
- Compose and Improvise: Create and experiment with sounds, developing their own musical ideas using voice, body percussion, and instruments, including through the use of technology.
- Understand Music: Gain an awareness of musical notation, structure, and vocabulary, enabling them to communicate and reflect on their musical experiences.
- Appreciate the Role of Music: Recognise the importance of music in human expression, community, and culture, understanding its power to bring people together and enrich lives.
Ultimately, we want children to leave our school as confident, expressive, and thoughtful musicians, ready to continue their musical journey in secondary school and beyond.
