Physical Education

At Cherry Burton Primary School, Physical Education is central to promoting the health, wellbeing and holistic development of every child. Our intent is to deliver a high-quality, inclusive PE curriculum that enables all pupils to develop physical competence, confidence, and enjoyment in physical activity, in line with the National Curriculum for England.

All pupils are timetabled for two hours of PE each week, delivered through a structured and progressive approach. We have adopted the Rising Stars PE program, which we adapt to suit the needs of our learners, ensuring that activities are accessible, engaging, and appropriately challenging for every child.

Pupils are taught fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness, which are developed progressively through a broad and balanced curriculum encompassing games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming, and outdoor adventurous activities. In Early Years, children access a carefully planned range of fine and gross motor activities, building the foundations for physical development.

PE at our school also fosters personal and social development. Pupils are encouraged to demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and teamwork, learning to communicate effectively, support one another, and show respect in both collaborative and competitive contexts.

We provide a rich variety of extra-curricular opportunities to enhance the curriculum, including sports days, inter-school competitions, and visits from external clubs such as the Humberside Seahawks and Hull FC. All pupils take part in the Daily Mile on our dedicated school track and are encouraged to engage in at least 30 minutes of active movement each day. Children with additional needs can access sensory circuits, and during playtimes, pupils have the opportunity to use the trim trail to develop strength, coordination, and confidence in an inclusive environment.

By the time pupils leave Cherry Burton Primary School, they will have developed the skills, confidence, and knowledge to participate fully in physical activity, make healthy lifestyle choices, and enjoy sport and physical recreation throughout their lives. Our PE curriculum equips pupils to be active, capable, and resilient members of the school community and beyond.
