Speaking and Listening

At our school, oracy is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that every child deserves the voice, confidence and communication skills needed to raise their aspirations, break down barriers and flourish as lifelong learners and future employees. Through high-quality oracy provision, we empower children to express themselves clearly, listen respectfully, think critically and engage confidently with the world around them.

We are committed to nurturing confident communicators who can excel in any field, alongside people from all backgrounds and educational experiences. Oracy enables our pupils to develop self-belief, resilience and ambition, equipping them with the skills to advocate for themselves and others. We create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where children feel valued, confident and courageous in sharing their ideas, opinions and beliefs.

Our oracy curriculum is embedded across all curriculum areas, ensuring pupils actively explain their thinking, justify opinions, ask thoughtful questions and engage in purposeful discussion. Children are given rich opportunities to develop their voice through presenting manifestos for Pupil Parliament, becoming House Captains, leading worship, debating key issues, performing poetry and engaging meaningfully with our local community. Through these experiences, pupils are encouraged to become courageous advocates for positive change, using their voices responsibly and compassionately.

All oracy provision is delivered alongside the English Speaking Board (ESB) assessment framework. This provides a structured, progressive approach to developing spoken language skills and offers pupils the opportunity to enter a formal examination. Through this nationally recognised qualification, children are able to set themselves apart, celebrate their achievements and gain a valuable accreditation that supports future education and employment pathways.

Through our commitment to oracy, we ensure that every child leaves our school confident, articulate and equipped to succeed—ready to thrive in learning, work and life.
