“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
Our history curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity and foster a deep understanding of the past. Aligned with the National Curriculum for History, the Ofsted History Research Review, and the Early Learning Goals, our intent is to ensure that children develop both their disciplinary understanding—the skills of historical enquiry, interpretation, and critical thinking—and their substantive knowledge of the world.
Through a thoughtfully sequenced curriculum, children explore the substantive concepts of civilisation, empire, invasion, power, and trade, which are carefully threaded through each unit. This allows pupils to make connections across time and place, developing a coherent understanding of how societies have evolved and interacted.
We place strong emphasis on local history, enabling children to investigate the past of Cherry Burton and its surrounding area. This helps them to contextualise national and global events within their own community, making history tangible, relevant, and engaging.
By the time children leave Cherry Burton Primary, they are confident in their ability to ask perceptive questions, analyse evidence, interpret sources, and communicate historical knowledge, while gaining a sense of their own place within the wider story of humanity.
