SEND

Cherry Burton Primary School is an inclusive school where all children are supported to access learning in a way that suits their individual needs. Our teaching is built on clear routines, visual support and straightforward communication so that lessons feel predictable and manageable for all pupils. Classrooms are organised to reduce distractions and help children understand what is expected, and staff make small, purposeful adjustments, such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, adapting resources or allowing additional processing time, so that pupils can take part confidently alongside their peers.

Staff take time to understand what helps each child learn well and stay regulated throughout the school day. Some children use sensory tools, alternative seating or movement breaks, while others may need support when transitioning between activities or managing busier environments. These adjustments are integrated into normal routines so that children feel supported without drawing unnecessary attention to their needs. When a child requires additional help with communication, early literacy, emotional regulation or social understanding, targeted small‑group or one‑to‑one sessions are provided to address specific areas of development.

Children who need a calmer, quieter space at times can access Cherry Bees, our nurturing room designed to support regulation through structured sensory or practical activities. The wider school environment also contributes to inclusion through our OPAL play offer, which provides a variety of purposeful outdoor play experiences that suit different interests, abilities and sensory needs.

We work in partnership with families and maintain open communication so that parents are involved in planning and reviewing any support. Where children require more specialised input, we work with external professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists and Autism Outreach. Their guidance helps ensure that strategies in school are well‑matched and effective.

Cherry Burton is also home to The Ark, our Enhanced Resource Provision for autistic pupils who benefit from a more specialist and structured approach. The Ark offers a calm, carefully planned environment, experienced staff, personalised timetables and supported transitions between the ERP and mainstream classrooms. This blended approach allows pupils to remain connected to the wider school community while learning in a way that reflects their individual needs.

We plan proactively to ensure that all children, including those with SEND, can take part in trips, clubs, performances and the full life of our school. Adjustments are considered early and made thoughtfully so that every pupil can access these experiences safely and confidently.

Our approach reflects the expectations of the East Riding “Ordinarily Available Inclusive Provision” document, and we use its recommendations as part of our ongoing reflection to ensure that our practice remains responsive, consistent and rooted in what works for children. Inclusion at Cherry Burton is based on understanding each child, removing barriers early and working collaboratively with families and professionals so that every child can learn, participate and make progress.
